USAID and Drummond Form a Partnership to Benefit Young Fishermen from Ciénaga

Ciénaga, May 5, 2017

Drummond Ltd. is joining the partnership to create opportunities for peaceful coexistence, reconciliation and improving the economic conditions of the young people who live in the fishing region in the municipality of Ciénaga (Magdalena), with the goal of continuing to contribute to the well being of the communities in its area of influence and to improve their economic conditions.

As part of the project, which will be carried out in partnership with USAID and its alliance program for reconciliation (ACDI/VOCA), Drummond Ltd. will invest more than 170 million pesos, which will go to programs to rebuild the area’s social fabric, entrepreneurship training and business training.

“From the start of its operations, Drummond has supported the construction and creation of these kinds of projects which undoubtedly contribute to the social and economic development of the region and builds opportunities for reconciliation and coexistence among its communities,” said the company’s President, José Miguel Linares.

Among the other projects that Drummond has implemented in the fishing region, include a training program for fishermen to learn to repair and maintain outboard motors and to learn fishing and sustainable business practices.

The company has also worked with families in cosmetology training programs (“Belleza por un Futuro”), a program that L’Oreal is conducting through the Casa en el Árbol foundation led by Taliana Vargas.

“Drummond has worked with the AUNAP (National Authority for Aquaculture and Fisheries) to assess and select the best option for these communities with respect to their fishing projects. At the same time, we are moving forward with USAID and Fundemicromag with the design for an additional project to empower and strengthen the fishermen’s associations in order to promote sustainable business practices,” said Alvaro Daza, head of Community Relations for Drummond Ltd. in the department of Magdalena.
